Mariusz Szypura**Mariusz Szypura** is a Polish composer, multi-instrumentalist, music producer, graphic designer, and visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice has spanned nearly three decades. First emerging in the early 1990s Polish alternative scene as a co-founder of iconic independent bands like Happy Pills, Blimp, and Silver Rocket, Szypura has evolved into a leading figure in the intersection of sound, image, and interactive technology.
As a **graphic designer**, Szypura has received extensive international recognition for his visual work. He was responsible for shaping the graphic identity of the **OFF Festival** in Katowice and has created artwork and design for more than 80 albums by various artists. In 2025, his mastery of visual communication was highlighted when he received the **Gold Award at the European Design Awards** for his Silver Rocket album cover and packaging concept. His design expertise further extends into the digital and interactive realm; he has designed and developed **four award-winning video games** recognized at prestigious festivals in San Francisco, Helsinki, Belgrade, and Warsaw. In recent years, Szypura’s practice has expanded into **audiovisual installations**, a field in which he is rapidly gaining global acclaim. In July 2024, his installation ***in:human*** at the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw explored the relationship between humanity and technology through the innovative **Simultaneously Double Disc Play Experience**, allowing viewers to interactively shape their own sensory environment. This was followed in November 2024 by ***êkhos***, presented during the Unsound Festival at **Lincoln Center in New York**, which combined large-scale stereoscopic anaglyph projections with an original soundscape to reinterpret traditional art forms through noise. In 2026, his work reached another milestone when an installation featuring his music was presented as part of the **Malta Biennale**, where the pavilion was honored with the "Best Pavilion" award. Szypura’s most ambitious recent project, ***Chopin Residue***, is a large-scale artistic undertaking that reinterprets the legacy of Fryderyk Chopin through a contemporary lens. Conceptually, the project dismantles Chopin’s compositions by **stripping away the piano**—the iconic instrument of his work—to uncover what Szypura calls the "residue": tonal fragments, harmonic echoes, and latent emotional tension. From a design and material perspective, the project is defined by the ***Nonaptych*** series—nine large-format (2m x 2m) visual artworks created from **vinyl "waste"**. These paintings are made entirely from the thread produced during the manual lathe-cut vinyl record-making process. Szypura conceptualizes this thread as the "**negative of the vinyl groove**"; while the record holds the sound, the thread embodies the "unsound" or "antisound". The project culminated in major exhibitions at **Fridman Gallery in New York** and **BALC Gallery in Osaka** in 2025. These installations utilized dynamic lighting synchronized to multi-channel sound fields, casting shifting shadows upon the thread canvases to create an immersive, multisensory experience that bridges classical motifs with radical reinvention. Through his continuous exploration of new media, Mariusz Szypura remains a vital voice in contemporary design and sound art. Chopin Residue Music Album Cover by Mariusz Szypura The artwork featured in the album inserts documents a series of large-format pieces created from thread waste produced during the lathe cut vinyl process, the physical negative of the groove. The design treats the package as an extension of the music, uniting sound, material, and process in a single physical object. The album reinterprets the works of Fryderyk Chopin with artists associated with Portishead, Sonic Youth, Battles, Beck, David Bowie, and Tortoise. |
